Netflix in August offers us 7 titles that interest us. Some are returning series, some are original movies, but all deserve a ping from the watchlist. Let us know what you think and if there are any we’ve missed that you want us to know about.
Coming in August 2022
The Sandman (August 5)
Here is a highly anticipated live-action version of by Neil Gaiman comic book classic. At almost 40 years, the story becomes a Netflix series. The streamer had a successful run with Lucifera spin-off character from the comics.
Gaiman himself describes his story The sandman: A wizard trying to capture Death to bargain for eternal life traps her younger brother, Dream. Fearing for his safety, the wizard kept him locked in a glass bottle for decades. After his escape, Dream, also known as Morpheus, goes in search of his lost items of power.
I Just Killed My Father (August 9)
Netflix has launched its true-crime docuseries in the park. Often compelling and full of twists and turns, these true crime titles are a popular sub-genre. I just killed my father is definitely an attention-grabbing title, so it looks like we’re in for another wild and exciting ride.
Synopsis: Anthony Templet shot his father and never denied it. But why he did it is a complex question with deep implications that go far beyond a single family.
Locke & Key Season 3 (August 10)
Are you ready to return to the Keyhouse? The popular series Locke & Key is dropping its third season, premiering this month. A nail-biting cliffhanger will most likely be addressed in the season two finale.
Not only that, but this is said to be the last season of the supernatural thriller. Don’t get around that if you know what I mean.
School Tales: The Series (August 10)
Who doesn’t like anthologies? With Asian horror becoming all the rage again in the United States, we get this offering from Thailand. There are eight stories in total, each with its own ghost story to tell:
A Girl Jumping to Her Death; a haunted library; canteen food made from human flesh; a headless ghost in the school storeroom; a room infested with devils; a vengeful demon in an abandoned building; and a classroom where only dead students attend class.
Will the stories have an overarching arc? We will have to wait and see.
Day shift (August 12)
Jamie Foxx is a Los Angeles pool boy who just wants to take care of his daughter Day shift. So what’s a little vampire-killing side hustle? This highly anticipated action masterpiece is from its creators John Wick 4 so you know it’s going to be frantic. The trailer alone is worth watching and I’ve already ticked the box.
Starring Dave Franco and Snoop Dogg, Day shift it will probably be graphic through the roof. Will it be? Strange things popular? Probably not, but it seems like a really good time.
Echoes (August 19)
This Aussie thriller soars in the States this month. Not much is known about the plot, and that might be a good thing if you like a little mystery with your horror. This comes from the creator 13 reasons why but it looks a little more like 2021 I know what you did this summer.
Leni and Gina are identical twins who have secretly changed their lives since they were children, culminating in a double life as adults, but one of the sisters disappears and everything in their perfectly planned world turns into chaos.
The Girl in the Mirror (August 19)
Anyone else noticing a trend in movie titles starting with “Girl”? This series is imported from Spain, another country growing in quality horror entertainment. With heavy Final destination vibrations, The girl in the mirror it intrigues us.
Synopsis: After surviving a bus accident in which almost all of her classmates die, Alma wakes up in a hospital with no memory of the incident…or her past. Her home is filled with memories that aren’t hers, and both amnesia and trauma cause her to experience night terrors and visions she can’t explain. With the help of her parents and friends, unbeknownst to her, she will try to unravel the mystery surrounding the accident while struggling to reclaim her life and identity.
From July:
July means half of the year is over and boy did Netflix have one a great one. Stranger things have happened.
But it’s not over yet, and the streamer has more up its sleeve in July in terms of fascinating content. In the remaining days they give us some interesting stories and we have selected a few that caught our attention.
We’re featuring them here so you can plan the rest of July in anticipation like the rest of us.
Damn July 31st
Even though 2020 was miserable for a lot of people, there were some decent titles that came out that year to appease the horror fan at home. Fucking is one of these titles and offers. With an interesting story and amazingly gruesome visuals, The Wretched still holds its own until its final act. If you didn’t get a chance to see this when it first came out, check out Netlfix and let it work its magic.
A defiant teenager struggling with his parents’ impending divorce faces a thousand-year-old witch who lives under the skin and poses as the woman next door.
Keep Breathing July 28th
At first it seems like Yellowjackets, but then it veers into Stephen King territory. Anyway, Keep breathing it looks like an adventure in terror and we have our figurative tickets. Of the screams (2021) Melissa Barrera stars as a plane crash survivor who is seemingly caught between reality and fantasy. The fantasy part might be more damaging than the elements, as her will to survive diminishes by the hour.
When a small plane crashes in the middle of the Canadian wilderness, a lone survivor must battle the elements—and her personal demons—to stay alive.
Indian Predator: The Butcher of Delhi
Netflix recently appeared for foreign directors. They are not afraid of subtitles, although they seem to like bad dubbing. This offer is based on true events and has some interviews in English. But what intrigues us the most is how one person can dismantle so many people and still evade the authorities.
One city, one cold-blooded killer and multiple gruesome murders. Get ready for the most gruesome and gory true crime story you’ll ever see. Because this time, evil is closer than you thought it would be.
School Stories Series TBD
As mentioned above, Netflix is stepping up their foreign horror movie game. Earlier this month, I received the recovered film Incantationand now we have another Taiwanese horror movie, School stories; this time it’s an anthology. It has all the makings of an Asian horror movie, with curses, classrooms and bad schools. But will we hold a grudge if he doesn’t live up to our standards?
Every school has its own stories of horror and mystery… the marching band stays at the school for the annual camp, and the members decide to “test” if some of their school’s ghostly stories are true.
My Village People July 22
From East Asia to West Africa we get a magical offering with The people of my village. No, it’s not an autobiography about a group of boys from the 70s who are famous for a wedding dance, although that might make the list of 6 Netflix titles we’re interested in. This is about a coven of witches who seem unhappy with a man courting two of them. Will this enchant us or lead us into the forest?
A young man’s weakness for women lands him in trouble when he is caught in a bizarre love triangle with a witch.
Bad Exorcist Wednesday, July 20
A TV-MA animated series? Yes and thank you very much. This Polish series shows two parts South Park and two parts Beavis and Butthead. Ostensibly, this series is about a freelance exorcist who is dirtier than the monsters he challenges. Sounds like a normal Saturday to me!
No demon is safe as Bogdan Boner, the alcohol-loving self-taught exorcist, returns with more inventive, obscene and deadly feats.
So that’s it so far; the 6 Netflix titles we’re interested in to round out the month. Even if they’re not as great as we’d like them to be, it’s comforting to know that we’re halfway to Halloween.
