Axed Green Lantern actor reveals John Stewart on Zack Snyder’s Justice League set

We came very close to seeing the John Stewart incarnation of Green Lantern in the DCEU, but it just wasn’t meant to be. During the production of Justice League, Zack Snyder had brought in actor Wayne T. Carr to play Stewart in the original ending of the crossover film. Carr even went so far as to film the character’s ending, and in a recent Twitter post, the actor showed off an image of himself in front of a green screen on set.

“GREAT! Stretching between takes,” Wayne T. Carr said in the caption. It also uses the hashtag #RestoreTheSnyderVerse, which continues to gain popularity after the premiere of Justice League by Zack Snyder The focus of the social media movement is for Warner Bros. to allow Snyder to continue making superhero movies set in his own DC Universe, separate from the ongoing DCEU with alternate versions of the characters.

Stewart gets the start of Justice League was an order that came from the studio. Because there were other plans for The Green Lantern at Warner Bros., the powers needed to save Stewart for another project. Snyder’s solution was to bring in Harry Lennix as Martian Manhunter, with the character essentially taking Stewart’s place in the Snyder Cut.

“They were like, ‘We have plans for John Stewart and we want to make our own announcement.’ So I said okay, I’ll give that to you. [Martian Manhunter] was the compromise, ”Snyder told Vanity Fair.

Previously, Ryan Reynolds played the role of Hal Jordan in the 2011 film The Green Lantern. The film received heavy criticism from DC fans and critics alike, killing off any potential plans to launch a new franchise. Even so, Snyder played with the idea of bringing in Reynolds for a special appearance also in Justice League as part of the Green Lantern Corps. For better or worse, that idea was eventually scrapped, as Snyder told THR in March.

“There was another idea I had for the Green Lantern that wasn’t Ryan, so I figured if we had taken that Green Lantern route, I should have had Ryan as an extra lantern,” he explained.

In all cases, the plans in place for The Green Lantern Finally appear to be making headway at Warner Bros. Last year it was announced that a TV series based on the ring-wielding superhero was in the works at HBO Max. Just recently it was reported that the show will star Finn Wittrock as Guy Gardner, although it will also star other Green Lanterns like Alan Scott, Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz. It’s not yet clear if John Stewart will appear or if Carr will still play the role if he does.

Last month it was also revealed that a new movie is also back in development at the studio. Rumor has it that the film will follow John Stewart and Hal Jordan, and it will likely tie into the HBO Max series. The film adaptation is slated for a 2022-23 release, but more details are under lock and key at Warner Bros. Our preview of Zack Snyder’s deleted John Stewart comes from Wayne T. Carr on Twitter.
