Smallville could well return as an animated series if two of the main stars of the series are successful. In the Superman prequel series, Michael rosenbaum played a younger version of iconic villain Lex Luthor with Tom Welling as teenage Clark Kent. The series concluded its run in 2011 after ten seasons and over 200 episodes, ending just as Clark first dresses as Man of Steel.
So whatever Superman and Lex Luthor in the Smallville universe? Ten years after the finale, it seems unlikely the series will continue with a reboot or sequel. That doesn’t mean Rosenbaum and Welling are done playing these characters, as the actors are keen to reprise their respective roles as Lex and Clark in an animated series adaptation. Addressing the possibility in a live Instagram Q&A with fans, here’s what Rosenbaum had to say about the possible return of Smallville.
“Good, Tom Welling and I got the idea of Smallville coming back as an animated series, so we’ll see if that ever happens, but we’ll try to do that. “
Lively follow-up makes sense. It’s much easier to bring all of the original actors back on board if the actors reprise their roles only in voice, which can even be recorded from a distance. A live-action continuation would also be more difficult to sell to a network or streamer than an animated series, given the high costs involved in adapting something like Superman. In short, a cartoon fallout is much more likely to happen than anything else, if we get some sort of Smallville continued at all.
This isn’t the first time Rosenbaum has spoken of his desire to do a Smallville animated series with Welling. In 2018, the couple appeared at AwesomeCon in Washington, DC, where they were asked about a possible revival. According to CBR, Welling responded that “animation can be fun.” For his part, Rosenbaum revealed that he actually gave the idea a lot of thought, at one point, kicking off the series at Smallville co-creator Alfred Gough.
“I swear to God, I took this to Al, the creator of Smallville, I said: ‘We should do an animation Smallville“Says Rosenbaum.” Can you imagine? It would be huge! S mallville: the animated series, with all the real voices and all the guest stars […] bring them on, that would be just cool. “
The story of Smallville had a brief continuation as a digital comic Smallville Season Eleven, which debuted in 2012. Set after the events of the television series, the comic stars Clark now fighting crime as Superman. In 2019, Welling and Erica Durance (Lois Lane) would resume their Smallville roles in the Arrowverse crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths. Rosenbaum was also fortunate enough to return as Lex Luthor, but turned it down as he was not allowed to see the script for the first time.
Time will tell if Smallville: The Animated Series never comes to fruition, but HBO Max seems like a perfect home for such a series if it ever gets the nod. Rosenbaum’s clip addressing the possibility comes to us from @BatKilmer on Twitter.
