One of the more ambitious superhero movies is James Gunn’s upcoming DCEU offering, The suicide squad. After the success of Gunn’s guardians of the galaxy franchise, fans expect big things from the filmmaker’s first foray into the DCEU. And it looks like Gunn intends to oblige. When a fan asked the filmmaker on Twitter what The suicide squad different from his previous films, Gunn provided a promising explanation.
“100% more shark (and no catch is prohibited in any way). [Later adding] No Hold means I wasn’t constrained by most tentpole film formulas OR budget OR scoring. YES, sometimes those constraints can be a help, so I was committed to telling a tight story first and foremost about some unkind characters that we might like. “
This reference to not being constrained by the formula of a tentpole function could be seen as a blow to the MCU. While James gunn has always maintained that he enjoyed great creative freedom while doing the Guardians movies, he also admitted that there were story elements that needed to be put into them not because he wanted to include them, but to set up the events of the rest of the “Infinity War” saga.
It seems that Gunn did not feel such constraints in doing The suicide squad, and was free to do pretty much whatever he wanted with the story and the characters. This means that audiences will get a taste of pure Gunn in the upcoming film. You know the guy who made the 2006s Slide, a dark comedy about alien parasites that invade humans and turn them into grotesque, bloated, worm-like monstrosities.
We could reasonably expect something so disturbing The suicide squad, an R-rated feature, as well as the usual big-budget comic book action show, which Gunn previously promised the film was talking about a lot while talking about the project during DC FanDome.
“It will be unlike any superhero movie ever made. It is by far the greatest movie I have ever made … It truly was the greatest and most exciting trip of my life. in making this movie … I will say that have about as many explosions and crashes in this movie as in any other movie. In fact, the guy who did all of our special effects on this movie, Dan Sudick, who’s done almost every Marvel movie … says there’s more to it in that movie than all of those movies he’s made combined. “
Written and Directed by James Gunn, The suicide squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Alice Braga, Pete Davidson, Joaquín Cosio, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Nathan Fillion, Steve Agee, Sean Gunn, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Jennifer Holland and Tinashe Kajese, with Sylvester Stallone and Viola Davis.
