Whether you were around in the 80s or 90s or not, you’ve probably heard of Duran Duran, the British pop band that at one point were as popular as the Beatles.
The group have just announced their 16th studio album, Dance Macabre, and we teased it with the title track, which you can listen to below. What’s interesting about this LP is that it was inspired by Halloween and all the strange things that happen on that holiday.
“The song “Dance Macabre” celebrate the joy and craziness of Halloween,” said Nick Rhodes, the band’s keyboardist and vocalist. “It’s the title track of our upcoming album, which brings together an unusual mix of covers, reworked Duran Duran songs and some new compositions. The idea was born from a show we played in Las Vegas on October 31, 2022. We decided to take advantage of the moment to create a unique, special event… the temptation to use glorious gothic images, on a soundtrack dark with horror and humor. it was simply irresistible.”
He adds: “That night inspired us to explore further and make an album using Halloween as a key theme. The record metamorphosed through a pure, organic process, and not only was it made faster than anything since our debut album, but it also resulted in something none of us could have ever predicted. Emotion, mood, style and attitude have always been at the core of Duran Duran’s DNA, we look for light in darkness and darkness in light and I feel like we’ve somehow managed to capture the essence of all that in this project. “
Danse Macabre not only has original material, but also some covers and covers also: “Bury a Friend” by Billie Eilish, “Psycho Killer” by Talking Heads (feat. Victoria De Angelis of Måneskin), “Paint It Black” by the Rolling Stones, “Spellbound” by Siouxsie and the Banshees, “Supernature ” by Cerrone, and “Ghost Town” from The Specials, and a Rick James-inspired bop, “Super Lonely Freak”.
The album will be released on October 27.
Drummer Roger Taylor hopes fans will listen and gain a new appreciation for them: “I hope you’ll take a journey with us through the darker side of our inspirations to where we are in 2023. Maybe you’ll walk away with an understanding deeper. of how Duran Duran we’ve reached this point in time.”
