If you are constantly looking for something out of the box – as well as challenging in the horror genre. Please do not look any further The child on HBO Max. Not to be confused with the amazing bizarre 1973 film Ted Post of the same name, this new series focuses on a mysterious child who is creepy and could be anti-Christ … or something.
The first episode of the new 8-episode series begins with a woman throwing herself off a cliff by the sea. She is soon followed by a baby crawling off the same rock, throwing himself. I mean, we’re talking about starting a big WTF bang, aren’t we?
The official synopsis for The child it goes like this:
When 38-year-old Natasha lands unexpectedly with a baby, her life of doing what she wants, when she wants, implodes dramatically. Controlling, manipulative and with violent powers, the baby turns Natasha’s life into a horror show. Where it comes from? What he wants? And how far will Natasha have to go to recover her life? She doesn’t want a baby. The child wants it.
There is quite a bit of mystery in the first episode, with very few answers coming your way. Michelle de Swarte is at the center of the story and takes on the role with absolute mastery. She plays the role with a heavy emotional reluctance in a nightmare wormhole with the maternal vignette.
The writers, Sophie Goodhart, Kara Smith, Anchuli Felicia King and Susan Stanton, all seem to borrow very real emotional rhythms from the kerfuffle challenge that motherhood represents. All this coming from a position of someone who is not ready to take on the role of motherhood. All this while combining those moments with a creepy and very real horror that awaits at every corner. The baby is terrified, but he also has a very dry sense of humor. In essence, it creates something you might find if we lived in a multiverse where Edgar Wright took over the consequences of Rosemary’s Baby. What happens after Mia Farrow discovers her baby in that crib? What happens next? Well, that could very well be the answer … possible.
Although there aren’t many answers in the first episode, I will say that I think this series seems to become very wizarding and cult. The trailer below suggests what to expect from the rest of the season. We are excited to move on with this series and continue to be horrified by the damn lightness attacks in which we find out that the bad and killer baby is really adorable.
You can watch the first episode of The child right now. The remaining 7 episodes will be broadcast every Sunday evening, between May 1 and June 12.
