Becky’s Wrath – May 26
Becky’s Wrath asks: “If John Wick did it have nazis in it?” This revenge thriller stars Matt Angel (Grimm), Alison Cimmet (Bad), and Lulu Wilson (Becky).
The chilling trailer describes this as an ultra-violent gore-fest, with a dash of comedy thrown in for good measure. If you weren’t satisfied with seeing a teenage girl kill neo-Nazis once, then this is the summer movie for you.
The Boogeyman – June 2, 2023
It wouldn’t be summer without a Stephen King adaptation coming to theaters. Based on a short story by kingthis film follows two sisters who try to cope with the death of their mother while being tormented by a supernatural entity that feeds on suffering.
Rob Savage (Host) will get the honor of directing the film this year. Performances of Sophie Thatcher (the yellow vests) and David Dastmalchian (Dune) makes it seem like a grim event. Originally slated for a Hulu exclusive, this film won over fans during test screenings and now has a theatrical release.
Angry Black Girl and Her Monster – June 9th
Classic movie monsters are back this year. Not only did I get two Dracula movies, but we also get a reimagining of it Frankenstein’s monster. Unlike its predecessors, this film promises to be a little bloodier.
This directorial debut from Bomani J. Stry (Nerves of Steel) portrays a young anti-hero who tries to cure the disease of death. In main roles Chad L. Coleman (zombies), and Laya DeLeon Hayes (God of War: Ragnarök), this film will hopefully drag this classic story into the modern age.
The Blackening – June 16, 2023
Not surprisingly, Blackening is the first horror comedy based around the Juneteenth holiday. Tim Story (Hairdresser’s) took it upon himself to direct this film and dismantle stale horror tropes.
It also has an impressive line-up of actors including Antoinette Robertson (Dear white people), Dewayne Perkins (Saved by the bell), and Sinqua Walls (Teen Wolf). With the tagline “We Can’t All Die First”, this appears to be a self-conscious satire of the genre.
Insidious: The Red Door – July 7, 2023
Summer is also a time for studios to release their newest sequels, reboots and remakes. As a result we have Insidious: The Red Doorthe fifth installment of the franchise.
Not only will Patrick Wilson (Hard candy) stars in his iconic role, but will also make his directorial debut. Adding to the tension, it’s been a decade since the events of the last film, and the Lamberts are still trying to overcome their past.
Cobweb – July 21
This story is inspired by the classic short story The revealing heart of Edgar Allan Poe. Following his success with the terrifying Marianna, Samuel Bodin (Batman: Ashes to Ashes) tells the story of a young boy who hears a mysterious knocking throughout his house.
If that’s not enough, we also get amazing performance from Lizzy Caplan (Cloverfield), Antony Starr (boys), and Woody Norman (Little Hand). Not much has been revealed about this one, so be sure to keep an eye out for updates.
Talk to me – July 28, 2023
The newest movie from A24, Talk to me will get a limited release this summer. However, usually A24 the trailers are vague at best.
If you haven’t already seen it, we’ve got all the info you need on our Sundance review of the film right here. Sophie Wilde (Portable door), Joe Bird (Rabbit), and Alexandra Jensen (beat) titles this supernatural thriller.
This will also be the brothers’ theatrical directorial debut Danny Philippou (The Babadook) and Michael Philippou (RackaRacka).
Haunted Mansion – July 28, 2023
Summer wouldn’t feel the same without an introductory horror movie for all the little ghouls out there. The Haunted Mansion It is from Disney the second attempt to turn the famous ride into a blockbuster. Unlike the previous iteration which was not well received by critics.
This film features an all star cast including Rosario Dawson (The city of sins), Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween), Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice), Owen Wilson (Loki), Jared Leto (Morbius), and Danny DeVito (Matilda).
The plot follows a single mother and a team of experts as they attempt to remove the spirits from her newly purchased mansion. Even if it’s not your favorite form of family terror, it looks like it’ll be a fun ride.
Sympathy for the Devil – July 2nd
Nicolas Cage (Renfield) plays a deranged villain best. No one can go psycho like this man can. Even if you don’t like his movies, you have to respect the talent. Who else can scream bees in a way that goes down in horror history?
Sympathy for the devil tells the captivating tale of cat and mouse, where the lines of reality begin to blur. Along with the production of the film Nicolas Cage are Alex Lebovic (Barbaric), Allan Hungarian (sound), and Stuart Manashil (His house).
Meg 2: The Trench – August 4
The only information we have about this movie is that a giant prehistoric shark will try to kill Jason Statham (Meg) again. That being said, we have the very talented ones Ben Wheatley (The kill list) taking the helm as the film’s director. If that’s not enough to get you excited for summer, I don’t know what will.
Demeter’s Last Voyage – August 11th
This movie is based on a chapter from from Bram Stroker Dracula entitled The Captain’s Log. His journey follows Demeter as the ferry Dracula in England, using the crew’s blood to keep himself alive.
This is the second film that Universal Pictures is released using the de character Draculathe other is the wonderful Renfield.
Movie stars Corey Hawkins (Kong: Skull Island), Aisling Franciosi (nightingale), Liam Cunningham (game of thrones) and is directed by André Ovredal (The troll hunter).
Birth/Rebirth – August 18
The second interpretation of Frankenstein on this list, Birth/Rebirth looks at the subject material from a more paternal angle. Using pregnancy viscera to maintain a reanimated body is a new twist on an old story.
Adding to the hype are appearances by horror alumni, including Judy Reyes (Smile), Marine Ireland (The Empty Man), and Breeda wool (mr mercedes).
