Writer Kevin Williamsonthe man who created Screamand I know what you did this summer kicks off 2023 by putting us all back into the pandemic with his first original feature screenplay since Cursed in 2005.

The prolific horror screenwriter was a mainstay of cinema in the late 90s and early 2000s, but after disappointing box office results for both Cursed (2005) and uncredited Venom (2005), Williamson didn’t return to his slasher roots until 2011 Scream 4. Between that time, he had great success as a screenwriter for the TV series Vampire Diaries (2009).

There is a certain formula to Williamson’s slashers. Usually a young adult is stalked by a killer, whether the threat is human or supernatural.

This signature is evident in the new film Sick which he wrote and releases Peacock on January 13. Directed by John Hyamsthe plot feels like a Williamson board with all the nostalgic trappings of a 90s killer thriller:

“As the pandemic steadily brings the world to a halt, Parker and her best friend, Miri, decide to quarantine themselves in the family’s lake house—or so they think.” — Loglines

The Williamson/Hyams the team feels like a perfect fit. Hyams directed the 2020 psychological thriller Single about a woman pursued by a deranged serial killer. That movie currently has a 91% fresh rating Rotten tomatoes.
