“The Exorcist: Deceiver” has been announced as the second chapter in the Exorcist Trilogy and has a 2025 release date

The world of horror cinema is set to be electrified once again with the next sequel to the legendary film “the Exorcist.” Entitled “The Exorcist: Faithful”, the film is brought to life by the creative team behind the recent Halloween trilogy. This new chapter in the Exorcist saga promises to be a direct sequel to the original 1973 film, bypassing all the sequels that followed.

The original “Exorcist,” directed by William Friedkin and based on William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel, sent shivers down the spine of audiences around the world. Its chilling tale of a demon-possessed young woman and her mother’s desperate attempts to save her through an exorcism led by two Catholic priests has been hailed as one of the greatest horror films of all time. The film’s legacy is such that it remains one of the few horror films to be recognized with Academy Award nominations upon release.

Exorcist

“The Exorcist: Believer” is directed by David Gordon Green, known for his work on the Halloween series. The screenplay, co-written by Green and Peter Sattler, follows the harrowing journey of a father whose child is possessed. In his desperation, he seeks help from Chris MacNeil, the mother from the original film, who has had eerily similar experiences.

The film has an impressive cast including Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd, Lidya Jewett, Olivia Marcum, Raphael Sbarge, Jennifer Nettles and Okwui Okpokwasili. The legacy sequel will also see the return of Ellen Burstyn, reprising her role as Chris MacNeil, adding more authenticity and nostalgia to the project.

The Exorcist: Faithful

When news of a project based on “The Exorcist” first broke, it was met with skepticism from fans, many of whom feared it would be a simple reboot of the 70s classic. However, the decision to create a legacy sequel was received more positively, offering a fresh take on the iconic story while respecting its original roots.

Despite the positive reception, Jason Blum, producer and CEO of Blumhouse Productions, acknowledges the inherent risk involved in revisiting such an iconic franchise. High production costs add to the pressure to deliver a film that lives up to the expectations set by the original.

The Exorcist: Faithful” is a high-stakes gamble, but one that could pay off handsomely if it manages to recapture the haunting allure of the original. The film is scheduled to be released by Universal Pictures on October 13, 2023, giving a new generation of viewers the chance to experience the terrifying world of “the Exorcist“.
